Rifling Fitted with a tapered barrel of the finest steel and of medium weight, the Zephyr is blessed with good Balance and Fine Accuracy. Pacific Rifle Company employs Genuine Forsyth Rifling™—a very unique method of rifling gun barrels—which serves several purposes and results in attributes unique to our rifles. Before one can appreciate the Benefits of this rifling, however, it is helpful to understand a simple yet monumental Fact that has heretofore been overlooked or simply not understood. And that is... Due to the fact that the sphere is a Perfect geometrical form, it has been observed that very little rotational spin is necessary to accurately stabilize the larger diameter (.58 cal +) round ball in flight. More Questions and Answers Q: It seems to me that I read
somewhere that you guys use a cone-shaped breech. Why is that? A: That's correct. We do countersink the face of the breechplug into a coned configuration. This provides a number of advantages. First, the fire from the cap flashes into the powder charge at the point of the cone. This eliminates the possibility of the "burn" choosing any number of random burning patterns as can happen when you simply spray the cap flash into the side of the charge. The flash always begins at the point of the cone and works its way forward through the charge. This consistency of ignition translates into accuracy. Second. You ex-military men probably have heard of the shaped charge principle. Well, the coned breech provides us with the advantage of the shaped charge principle and amplifies the ignition impulse and energy release. It's part of the reason why the Zephyr's barrel can completely burn powder charges of 200 - 300 grains. |
